Casting

Earlier reports had suggested that Anand, who made Salaam Namaste, Bachna Ae Haseeno and Anjana Anjani in the past, planned to make his next film with Shahid Kapoor. But Shahid's last two releases - Mausam and Teri Meri Kahaani - performed below expectations, and soon news did the rounds that Anand was planning a film with Hrithik. In September 2012, first Hrithik was confirmed to play the lead role. After that Katrina was confirmed to play the female lead in the movie. Hrithik started working on the film immediately after wrapping up Krrish 3.Hrithik Roshan charged 300 million and that was the highest amount any actor in Bollywood had charged up front till that date. After this report trade analyst Amod Mehra opined, "So what if Hrithik is charging 300 million for the film? I think it's less compared to what he gives in to his projects."

Filming

In December,2012 it was confirmed that remake of Knight and Day will be called Bang Bang. In March,2013 Kashmir schedule of the movie was cancelled. Shooting for the film began on May 1, 2013, while the film was scheduled to release on May 1, 2014. Unique water action sequences were shot in Thailand and Greece. In Phuket, Hrithik Roshan performed a stunt where he had to use a water jetpack called a Flyboard and go 45 feet high in the sky and then dive down in the water. It was for the first time that something like this was used in Bollywood or Hollywood and Hrithik became the first actor to do a flyboarding stunt in a film. Hrithik was injured during this schedule and subsequently had to undergo a brain surgery for removal of a blood clot from his brain (Subdural haematoma). Also, the Kashmir schedule of the film was delayed because of unrest in the valley.
The delays caused the film to postpone its release date to October 2, 2014, and led to a budget increase to 1.3 billion, from a pre-planned budget of 800 million - 900 million. The shooting resumed in January 2014, in Shimla, Manali, Abu Dhabi, Delhi and Prague. The shooting schedule in Shimla went on for straight six weeks. The Manali bridge where the majority of scenes were shot, has become a grand tourist attraction and it was renamed as Bang Bang point. In one of the chase sequence in the film, 120 cars were involved. This scene was shot in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in a Bollywood movie, F1 cars were used. Even after the brain surgery, all the stunts were performed by Hrithik himself. The stunts were designed by Andy Armstrong and shot in Abu Dhabi. A song shoot was completed at an open-cafeteria in Film City, Mumbai on 19 April 2014. The Abu Dhabi segment(which had a high level action sequences) of shooting was completed on 20 May in collaboration with twofour54. It is the first Bollywood film to be shot and co-produced in Abu Dhabi. Last leg of the film was scheduled in Prague and was wrapped on 15 July 2014.
